Mohawk Towpath National Scenic Byway

The Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway seeks to increase awareness, enjoyment and linkage of the wide variety of scenic, recreational and historic resources along the Mohawk River and Erie Barge Canal corridor from Waterford to Schenectady. The Byway is a regional partnership of communities that will balance the promotion of local interests with the protection of heritage resources. In 2024 the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway won the National Scenic Byway Foundation (NSBF) Viewshed Improvement Award for its community-driven Invasive Species Mitigation Program. An army of volunteers cleared invasive species from the shores of this byway paralleling the original Erie Canal to open views for their self-guided birding tour., leading to a dramatic increase in use.
