Highbridge Water Tower and Viaduct

An official Path Through History Site! Built during the mid-19th century as part the Croton Aqueduct, which brought fresh water to the growing city of New York, the bridge originally carried water over the Harlem River to a water tower and reservoir in Manhattan, now High Bridge Park. Designed by engineer John Jervis, who worked on the Erie Canal, and architect James Renwick, who designed St. Patrick`s Cathedral, the bridge, which closed in the 1970s, is being transformed into a bike and walk way, connecting recreational resources on both sides of the river.
