History of the Kearney Military Academy at BCHS

Fabulous Friday Speaker Series presented by Historian Dr. Nathan Tye. Founded in 1891 as the Platte Collegiate Institute of Higher Education, the school began as a co-educational institution under the leadership of Kearney’s Episcopal Bishop Anson R. Graves. Early coursework ranged from collegiate preparation and business to art and military training, reflecting an ambitious vision despite limited resources. As female enrollment declined in the late 1890s, the institution transitioned into the Kearney Military Academy, maintaining strong ties to the Episcopal Church throughout its existence. The Academy became known for its disciplined cadet life, including the tradition of marching more than 30 blocks to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church each Sunday. The school also maintained a robust athletic program supported by Kearney’s first swimming pool and tennis courts. Dr. Tye’s presentation highlights the Academy’s students, daily life, and lasting legacy. The school closed in 1923 due to declining enrollment, but found later uses, including housing POWs during World War II, before its ultimate demolition.
