Path of Patriots Self-Guided Audio Walking Tour

Created as part of the Union League’s America250 celebration, The Path of Patriots is a self-guided audio walking tour that brings you into the streets of Civil War era Philadelphia to explore the founding of the Union League of Philadelphia, one of the nation’s most distinguished and essential civic institutions. Founded in 1862 by a group of Philadelphians as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, the Union League laid the philosophical foundation for Union Leagues across the country. At a time when the city and the nation were torn apart by civil war, these civic leaders organized public support for Lincoln, raised resources for the Union war effort, influenced public opinion through newspapers and public meetings, and helped mobilize volunteers and aid for soldiers. This tour focuses on those founders and the real working places where they acted. The stops are not traditional monuments, but former newspaper offices, banks, churches, hospitals, enlistment halls, and early clubhouses. In the 1860s, these were active spaces where decisions were made in real time about the future of the country and the meaning of the Declaration of Independence. Either way, the experience centers on the individuals who organized to defend the Union, support Lincoln, and push for the abolition of slavery, ultimately forming the Union League of Philadelphia.
