Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide

First built in 1904, the Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide began when Captain E.S. Chase—who designed much of the town’s streets and trails—was asked by his grandchildren to create a “real good” winter slide. Local residents hand-cut massive blocks of ice, hauled them by horse-drawn wagons, and constructed an icy run that started on Lake Avenue and stretched across frozen Eagles Mere Lake. More than 120 years later, the slide is still rebuilt each winter by volunteers using Chase’s original plans, preserving a rare and enduring Pennsylvania winter tradition. The quarter-mile-long ice track is grooved to keep toboggans steady and can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. Up to five adults may ride per sled, with heavier sleds traveling faster. Riders of all ages participate, from young children to seniors. Operation is weather-dependent, so conditions should be checked before traveling.
