A Time for Liberty

In 2026, Eastern State Penitentiary invites visitors to commemorate America’s 250th birthday with A Time for Liberty: Our Shared History, Our Shared Future—a yearlong series of inclusive programs exploring the evolving meaning of liberty and justice in the United States. Set inside the striking cellblocks of America’s first penitentiary, the initiative features family-friendly festivals, engaging panel discussions, pop-up exhibitions from Eastern State’s archives and new online learning resources. Founded on a bold belief in human dignity and rehabilitation, Eastern State offers a powerful setting to reflect on justice, accountability and second chances during the Semiquincentennial year. 2026 Events Include: The Great Escape: Stories of Resistance and Creativity at Eastern State March 27–April 5, 2026 Themed mini tours, pop-up talks on Prohibition-era policing and Al Capone, and interactive activities reveal powerful stories of resilience within the prison walls. Philly Saves: Adaptive Reuse of Sites of Memory and Trauma May 2026 A timely exploration of how historic sites—from prisons to churches and schools—can be reclaimed as spaces for civic dialogue and healing. Wednesday Nights: Interfaith Dialogue on Faith, Reentry and Prison Reform Begins May 27, 2026 Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders examine faith’s influence on rehabilitation and reintegration. Freedom through Faith: Judaism at Eastern State and Beyond Opening July 2, 2026 A new exhibit exploring how religious freedom—named among America’s “unalienable rights”—was practiced within the prison, particularly among its Jewish community. Throughout the year, Justice 101 conversations—including a June program with historian Hasan Jeffries on the history and meaning of Juneteenth—invite deeper engagement. On October 3, Eastern State partners with the Philadelphia Historic District for 52 Weeks of Firsts, spotlighting its legacy as the nation’s first penitentiary. In total, A Time for Liberty includes five festivals, nine panel discussions, two pop-up exhibitions and educational resources for classrooms nationwide—offering meaningful ways for visitors of all ages to reflect on America’s past and imagine a more just future.
