Keystone of America: Exploring American Independence Celebrations in Pennsylvania 1776-2026

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives Archives, 628 Irvis Office Building, Capitol Complex, Harrisburg, is opening a new exhibit showcasing American Independence celebrations leading up to 2026. The new exhibit, “Keystone of America” explores the 1826, 1876, 1926, and 1976 celebrations and Pennsylvania’s role in each of the anniversaries. The official unveiling is February 3, 2026, but will remain open for visitors for the remainder of 2026. This exhibit specifically highlights memorabilia from the 1976 Bicentennial which was held in Philadelphia. Included are the programs and original plans for the General Assembly’s ceremonial session, which was held in front of Independence Hall with Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, President of France, as a guest of honor. The exhibit also showcases clothing on loan from the Fashion Archives and Museum at Shippensburg University and individual collectors to help visitors feel immersed in each of the featured eras. Additionally, unique, never-before-seen items from the House Archives’ collections are on display, including photographs, speeches, and documents relating to the festivities. “Throughout 2026, the entire country will commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States,” said Jesse Teitelbaum, Director of the PA House Archives. “Pennsylvania will host its fair share of programs, activities, and exhibits. The PA House of Representatives is proud to be one of them. Many of the items on display in this exhibit are one-of-a-kind and should not be missed.” Maps to the PA House of Representatives Archives and Museum are available at the Capitol Tour Guide Desks at each Capitol entrance.
