All-Ages Workshop: Planting Onions with The AgraLiving Institute

Step into the garden for an interactive experience that brings Bermuda’s agricultural history to life through the story of its iconic onion. Explore how onions became central to Bermuda’s farming identity, tracing their origins to seeds brought from Europe during British colonial expansion. Through a social justice lens, we’ll unpack how this “Golden Age of Agriculture” relied on the importation of over 3,000 laborers, while simultaneously displacing newly emancipated Black Bermudian farmers and excluding them from the prosperity of the land. Participants will engage directly with the soil, learning how to sow onion seeds and transplant seedlings, connecting past to present through hands-on practice. As storytelling and action come together, this experience creates space for healing, both through learning our shared history and through the grounding act of working with the soil, while fostering reflection on resilience, inequity and the enduring relationship between people and land in Bermuda. This workshop is offered in association with An(Other) World, on view in the Butterfield Gallery September 25, 2026 – March 20, 2027. Admission to Masterworks is free on the Second Saturday of each month so be sure to visit the exhibitions on view after the workshop. Date: Saturday, November 14, 2026 Time: 10am-12pm Facilitator: Chris Faria, Founder and Managing Director of The AgraLiving Institute Chris has been working in Bermuda’s horticultural industry since 2006, with experience spanning plant nurseries, commercial farming, and now his own gardening education and consultation business. Since 2016, he has focused on sustainable farming practices and is a certified teacher dedicated to sharing this knowledge with others. Chris is also a certified laboratory technician through Dr. Elaine Ingham’s Soil Food Web School and is currently advancing his expertise through their consultation training program. Recognized as a Tradition Bearer by Bermuda’s Department of Culture, Chris is deeply committed to preserving and sharing the island’s agricultural heritage. His work centers on food security, regenerative practices, and empowering the community through education and connection to the land. Workshop capacity: Maximum of 15 participants to ensure individualized attention and a supportive environment.
