Expressive Figure Drawing with Sarah Pierroz

Discover the art of drawing the human form with confidence and soul. In this four-session series, we go beneath the surface to understand the scaffolding of the body, while learning to capture its movement with bold, expressive lines. Working from theory and live model, we will focus on breaking the figure down into simple, manageable shapes. You will learn the foundations of anatomy, the rhythm of gesture, and how to use high-contrast shading on toned paper to make your work pop off the page. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned artist, this course offers a supportive space to build technical skill while finding your own unique artistic language. You’ll leave with a solid anatomical foundation and a collection of drawings. Week 1: Structure & Anatomy Learn the “why” behind the shapes. We’ll look at the major muscle groups and bony landmarks, simplifying the limbs into 3D forms to help your drawings feel solid and believable. Exercise: Structural studies of the core and limbs using charcoal. Week 2: Gesture & The Action Line We begin with the “energy” of the body. You’ll learn to capture the rhythm of a pose in seconds, using sweeping lines to map out the torso and hips before adding structural details. Exercise: Rapid-fire gesture drawings focusing on movement and “flow.” Week 3: High Contrast & Toned Paper This week is about drama. We’ll explore high-contrast lighting, using deep shadows and bright white chalk highlights on toned paper to make your figures look three-dimensional. Exercise: “Carving” the form out of the paper using light and shadow. Week 4: The Integrated Figure In our final session, we bring everything together. We will focus on how the skin wraps over the anatomy, using bold marks and refined shading to create a final study that is both accurate and expressive.
